Rear Adm. Robert E. Peary Papers. 1798 - 1976. Robert E. Peary Family Collection: Photographs Relating to Robert E. Peary's 1905-1906 Arctic Expedition

1905-1906

This series consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives taken during Admiral Robert E. Peary's Arctic expedition of 1905-1906. Included in the series are photographs of the ice-bound Roosevelt (XP-XPZ-61-32-1). There is also a photograph of a sketch of the Roosevelt by Albert Operati (XP-XPZ-75-1905-06-1). A well-known artist, Operati accompanied Peary on his 1896 and 1897 cruises to Greenland. Several members of the expedition party are pictured in this series, including Louis Wolfe, the expedition's surgeon (XP-XPZ-30-45-12 and 401-XPZ-69-1905-1); Professor Ross G. Marvin, Peary's secretary and principal assistant (XP-XPZ-75-1905-06-2); mate Moses Bartlett, a cousin to Robert A. (Bob) Bartlett, captain of the Roosevelt (XP-XPZ-75-1905-06-3); and Charles Percy, the steward (XP-XPZ-75-1905-06-4). Most of the photographs in the series, however, are views of unidentified waterways, headlands and other terrain. Among the identifiable features are photographs of Franklin and Crozier Islands (401-XPZ-33-48-9 and 401-XPZ-33-48-10). Included also are several photographs taken on October 13, 1905, from the summit of Cape Rawson southward and then northward toward Cape Joseph Henry, Ellesmere Island (XP-XPZ-62-33-4). Small expedition parties can be seen in the background of some of the photographs. As the expedition parties advanced northward, they took photographs of the cairns they constructed (XP-XPZ-5-7-1) and the supplies they stored along the trail (XP-XPZ-9-14-1 and XP-XPZ-10-15-1). Also included in this series are photographs of expedition hunting parties (XP-XPZ-61-32-6) and explorers (XP-XPZ-10-15), and Eskimos (XP-XPZ-30-45 and XP-XPZ-29-44). In some of the photographs Eskimo children are shown posing in their native fur clothing (XP-XPZ-47-17-1 through XP-XPZ-47-17-6). Filed with the photographs, when available, are NARA created caption lists and other notes and captions written in what appears to be Peary's hand.
